About Wilmer Sarmiento

20+ years of experience working in the IT and Product field, with special emphasis on projects related to E-Learning. I’ve been leading teams of multidisciplinary professionals in creating products for end users. I also have expertise in devising internal solutions designed to solve or optimize different business aspects, including customer relations, accounting, billing, and payment management.As a founder of one of the most successful startups in the region (Open English), I’ve also gained expertise in the complex process of creating and building an idea from scratch. I first teamed with Andres Moreno while we were engineering students at the Universidad Simon Bolivar (USB) in Caracas, Venezuela. I became the Chief Architect for the online learning platform, heading up infrastructure research and framework validation. Since its inception, I have overseen the entire corporate technology team with my specialized knowledge in database management, cloud computing, rich interactive applications, Java, HTML, and system administration.I was also responsible for building the ecosystem of tools and systems that enabled our company to be able to scale across multiple countries and regions by allowing our potential students to pay on their terms and with the payment methods that they use on a daily basis.More recently, I’ve been focusing on working with the product, academics, live instruction, and tech team to improve the learning and teaching experience for our students and teachers.I truly believe education is a transformational force. I was born and raised in Petare, a neighborhood in Caracas, Venezuela, which is known as the biggest slum in South America. Education, to me, was the ticket to transforming my life into becoming the professional that I am today. I feel humbled and honored to lead the team of professionals here daily, intending to help others transform their lives by mastering English as a second language.If you share the idea that education is a transformational force and that technology is changing how we learn, then we are on the same team.
