I am passionate about serving the most vulnerable and underserved members of our community. I help students find their voice - both literally and metaphorically. One of my many mantras as a teacher is \"I expect progress, not perfection.\" Students need to have a clear sense of what\'s expected, and that adults believe they\'re capable of more than they ever thought possible. They also need to know that they will receive unconditional support when they attempt something brave and fail. Students often think that before they can try anything really worthwhile, they must first be perfect. This belief makes doing anything meaningful nearly impossible. In my class, there is a huge sign that reads,\"Know this, you matter. Every single one of you.\" It\'s critical that our students understand that before they attempt anything, they are worth all the care and respect the world has to offer. They don\'t always believe this, but over time, I witness students begin to transform the way they think about themselves and others. If they have a belief in their intrinsic human worth, untethered from the outcome, they can begin to do unbelievable things. I\'ve been fortunate to witness these brave acts every day.
