ABOUT WILLIAM THOMAS

William Thomas has 17 years of antibody discovery, antibody engineering and protein characterization experience in the academic and government laboratory sector. He earned his PhD in Biological Sciences in the laboratory of George P. Smith (Nobel Laureate in Chemistry 2018) where he constructed phage display libraries for developing peptide reagents for use in positron emission tomography imaging of ErbB2 positive breast cancer. He then went on to work as a senior research technician at the University of Chicago as part of the Recombinant Antibody Network where he was involved in developing antibody reagents to all of the transcription factors elucidated by the Human genome project. There he was responsible for analytical characterization of recombinant antibodies and antigens by Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), Circular Dichroism, MALDI-TOF, and Differential Scanning Fluorimetry (DSF). William then went on to a postdoctoral fellowship at The United States Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) where he led a project to build immune antibody phage display libraries for the discovery of neutralizing antibodies against Equine encephalitis virus (EEV). At USAMRIID he established immune antibody phage display libraries from mRNA from Non-human primate pathogen challenge survivors, developed affinity selections, engineered recombinant anti-EEV antibodies, and characterized their binding kinetics with Biolayer Interferometry (BLI). In addition, William also characterized the binding kinetics for protein-protein interactions using BLI as support of other projects at USAMRIID, as well for training other scientist and technicians.
