About William Smith
Will” is a leader with a proven track-record in biopharmaceutical drug development and LCM through all phases of Clinical Development (CD), in Nephrology and in other therapeutic areas. Will attended Stony Brook School of Medicine and trained in Internal Medicine and Nephrology in NYC with the intention to become a community-based practitioner. After completing his Nephrology fellowship, Will built a thriving private practice in Nephrology & Hypertension before joining industry. In 2007, Will joined Wyeth as a Global Medical Director in Transplant and designed and led global phase IV clinical trials of sirolimus in solid organ transplant. Will moved to clinical development at Celgene in 2010. His work there began with anemia of CKD in a co-development partnership with Acceleron, but over the subsequent 6 years his responsibilities expanded as the Early Development Lead for the Inflammation & Immunology portfolio and line-manager overseeing multiple clinical stage assets in phase II, in multiple therapeutic areas. He moved to Bayer AG in 2016 as a Global Clinical Lead for antisense oligonucleotide assets in a co-development partnership with Ionis in Nephrology, and worked in late-stage development in Thrombosis. At Bayer Will additionally led the high-priority and visible Einstein-Junior program of 4 ongoing clinical trials in Pediatric Thrombosis to completion (ahead of schedule) and co-led the successful filing of data from 8 clinical trials for Xarelto, securing the EU pediatric incentive for Bayer and commercialization partner Janssen. Will joined Alexion in 2020 as Executive Medical Director of CD in the Hematology and Nephology Therapeutic Area where he oversees a team of 10+ Medical Directors and Clinical Development Scientists who lead multiple clinical stage assets and programs in phase II and in patients with serious and life-threatening rare diseases. He and his team deliver early Program Teams the development strategy for pre-clinical and phase I assets, and support Business Development in assessments and due diligence of external opportunities.At Alexion, Will is a trusted leader recognized for making substantial contributions to the strategic direction of the Hematology and Nephology Therapeutic Area in rare diseases, building a strong culture of collegiality, openness, and inclusion where innovative thinking and measured risk-taking can thrive, professional development of talent, and the enhancement of process to assure quality and integrity in the work conducted in Alexion’s Clinical Development.
