I study the movement of arms and the development of motor synergy in skill learning. Generally, synergy is when groups of movements begin to work together for the benefit of a skill, like throwing a ball. With practice, many smaller, separate movements become interlinked as you learn to throw. How this happens is of interest to me. Our methods include MEG and an ML analysis of hand kinematics. With this data, I aim to understand (1) how different stages of learning contribute to the development of synergy, and (2) which cortical or sub-cortical loops are responsible for the generation and reinforcement of synergic movement.
