ABOUT WILLIAM COWDROY
Director in ERM\'s Technical Safety team leading our Diversified Energy services in EMEA, including Oil & Gas (up-stream, mid-stream and down-stream), Power Generation, Hydrogen (production, transport and storage) and Carbon Capture (CCUS).I’m an experienced Technical Safety and Risk Management consultant, specialising in Functional Safety, Hazard and Risk Analysis, and Process Safety Management. Throughout my career, I’ve worked closely with operators of high-hazard process facilities to ensure their safety systems are robust, from design and specification through to operations, so they can be trusted to protect people, assets, and the environment. My career began in Chemical Engineering roles on Ferrybridge Carbon Capture Pilot Plant, Trimble County Power Station in the US, and Stanlow Oil Refinery. I later moved into Process Safety and Risk Management, where I have worked for leading consultancies DNV, ESC, and ERM. These roles have provided me with cross-sector experience including Diversified Energies, Chemicals, Biosafety/ Biocontainment, Pharmaceuticals, Manufacturing and Defense.I’m also an experienced Project Manager for major capital projects, most notably the Equinor Hydrogen to Humber (H2H) Saltend Project, one of the UK’s flagship blue hydrogen initiatives, where I led the Technical Safety, EHS aspects, Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and successfully delivered planning consent in early 2024.In parallel, I continue to deliver a wide range of Functional and Process Safety projects. These include chairing hazard & risk assessment workshops (e.g. HAZOP, LOPA, HAZID, Bowtie), conducting Reliability Analysis (e.g. RBD, FTA), leading Process Safety Management (PSM) audits for M&A due diligence, and overseeing all aspects of Functional Safety in line with IEC 61511 and IEC 61508.
