Teaching on the topics of Medical Ethics, with a focus on understanding, recovering from and avoiding ethical and boundary violations for licensed healthcare providers. The format for the ethics and boundary teaching includes live seminars, online learning, one on one telephone consultation, and weekly telephone call in group seminars. Lecture and readings are combined with shared experiences in a group setting to help each student develop insight into the causes of ethical and boundary violations and to construct and implement a plan to help them avoid future violations. ABOUT WILLIAM ALMON
Originally trained as a physician, I received my M.D. degree from Loyola University of Chicago. More recently I have focused my time and interests on teaching professional ethics to a broad spectrum of healthcare professionals, and in working for human rights causes. I have earned master’s degrees in Health Care Ethics and in Human Rights Practice. Currently, my interests as an ethicist focus on the intersection of human rights and healthcare ethics. I believe that ethical practice is critical in both healthcare and human rights. Presently, I am particularly interested in 1. moral harm in healthcare professionals and their patients, 2. equity in providing healthcare to poor and vulnerable populations, with a particular interest in immigrants, and 3. the ethics of organ harvesting and transplantation. Earlier this year, I served as a volunteer physician at a healthcare facility in Brooklyn, NY during the initial COVID-19 pandemic surge. I have continued to work with human rights organizations in this country as well as Russia having recently helped write and edit two successful grant applications. At present multiple human rights cases to which I have contributed research and editing are pending before the European Court of Human Rights.
