ABOUT WILL LICHTIG

As a construction lawyer, I witnessed firsthand some of the fundamental breakdowns in traditional project delivery. In many ways, lawyers have become students of failed projects! In 2002, my frustration with failed projects boiled over and lead me to pursue a deeper understanding of what contributes to successful projects and to develop a project delivery alternative that capitalizes on these successful characteristics. This journey lead me to become a student of Lean Project Delivery (\"LPD\").As special counsel to a major Northern California healthcare organization, I was able to help shape the first owner-sponsored major LPD initiative in the US. This initiative had ripple effects throughout Northern California and the rest of the US. I developed documents to support LPD and authored many of the processes and procedures followed on these projects. I also coached teams as they implemented these ideas. The original contract I developed for this Owner, the Integrated Agreement for Lean Project Delivery (\"IFOA\"), became the template for the ConsensusDoc 300.In a similar capacity, I assisted another major program to pursue Lean and IPD through use of a design-build \"Co-opetition.\" There, the Program Manager and three design-build entities were trained in the fundamentals of LPD and collaboratively pursued development of prototypical facilities. As the projects were intended to be \"design-build,\" the IFOA was modified to reflect this contracting structure. During this project, I was also responsible for overseeing the lean education program and development of a Project Delivery Guide, which described how lean methods would be implemented throughout planning, design, and construction.During the past five years, I have also assisted other teams throughout the country in pursuing Lean and Integrated Project Delivery. I now have the opportunity to focus my efforts at one of the leading lean companies in the world.
