Principal Engineer
Gentry Geotechnical Engineering, Pllc
Feb 2013 — Present · Asheville, NC, US
Mr. Gentry’s experience and responsibilities has included project cost estimating, proposal preparation, scheduling, training and supervision of staff engineers, field and laboratory technicians and drillers. His geotechnical engineering design experience includes drilling, standard penetration, Shelby tube sampling, rock coring, piezometer installation and monitoring, laboratory assignment and testing on geotechnical soil and rock samples, data evaluation, design of deep foundations and shallow foundation systems for single- and multi-story buildings, settlement estimates for shallow and deep foundations, earth pressure calculations for design of retaining walls and anchor blocks, design of flexible and rigid pavements including overlays. Mr. Gentry has evaluated the stability of native soil and rock slopes including fill and cut slope conditions for building pads and roadways. The evaluation has included visual observations, field exploration, laboratory testing, slope stability analysis and recommendations for re-construction or repair if found necessary. The recommendations for repair of slopes typically include flattening the slope, reinforcing the slope with soil nails, TECCO mesh or geogrids as a reconstructed slope or wall. Mr. Gentry has also prepared slope and wall design plans and specifications for MSE segmental block walls, geogrid reinforced soil slopes and soil nail walls.Mr. Gentry has evaluated the pavement condition of roadways to include visual pavement distress surveys, density and thickness measurements of the asphalt or concrete surface, density and thickness measurements of the aggregate base course, relative density or consistency of the subgrade soils, drainage concerns and comparison of actual pavement conditions versus the plans and specifications. The evaluation has included recommendations for re-construction of new pavements, overlays and repairs.
