1. Anesthesiologist Externship

   Shadowing Dr. Sheeran, an anesthesiologist at UVA Hospital, beginning during my second year of college, including time in the operating room, provided invaluable insight into the complexities of medical practice. From observing an Open Heart surgery to the countless epidurals I witnessed her deliver, this experience enhanced my understanding of the vital role anesthesiologists play in patient care. I gained hands-on exposure to medical procedures, teamwork dynamics, and patient interaction, which will undoubtedly contribute to my professional growth and development in the healthcare field.I also had the opportunity to shadow Dr. Paul DeMarco and his anesthetic team for 3 hours in September, where I observed a nerve block, spinal anesthetic shot, and two major surgeries—a knee replacement and a hip replacement. It was an incredible experience to witness the precision required in administering anesthesia and the close collaboration between the anesthesiologists and the surgical team. I gained valuable insights into how anesthesia is managed to ensure patient safety and comfort throughout complex procedures, deepening my appreciation for the critical role it plays in successful surgeries.
