Globalized Remote Mission Support is Now a Reality Chief Remote Mission Support Section SGITT is now supporting field missions in ICT Service Operations, Project Planning and Management, and Back-Office and Administration from both Brindisi and Valencia. The RMS approach calls for field missions to change from doing more with less to becoming streamlined and having a positive impact on the ground with the absolute minimal infrastructure. As the Service for Geospatial, Information and Telecommunications Technologies (SGITT) continues to develop and consolidate its activities, optimizing the use and effectiveness of all of its resources in support of field missions around the world, it introduces a new dedicated and distinct capacity within its management—the Remote Mission Support Section (RMSS). RMSS aims to comprehensively manage and coordinate the delivery of intra-mission technical, administrative and managerial support services and functions, from both Brindisi and Valencia, in a new and efficient way to ensure the short and long-term success of its mission customers. RMSS often requires a big shift in approach and outcomes and it cannot be achieved by business-as-usual. Subscribing missions are given the opportunity to move from an independent, non-standard approach to a standardized environment based on detailed business analysis and studies, made closely with the missions and established in order to respond with excellence to their specific business needs; for example, the access and utilization of core enterprise applications and mission business-critical data from remote locations.

RMSS joins the Field Technology Operations Centre (FTOC) and Geographic Information System (GIS) as a key functional pillar within SGITT. These pillars offer a diversity of expertise, experience and knowledge as well as a broadened perspective to SGITT’s security and service management functions, creating synergies and making the organizational team highly effective. The service aims to have a progressive impact, employing best practices in organizational responsibility and standardization across the spectrum of ICTS areas, which are in line with UN globally-accepted standards. Progress reporting is transparent, consistent, authentic and independently verified and takes into account both positive and negative impacts. For the first time in peacekeeping, new principles define the mission support approach and provide a road map to help missions engage
