About Wenbin Yu
How should we model composite structures and materials? This question has defined my career.During my Ph.D. under Prof. Dewey Hodges at Georgia Tech, I developed models for composite beams, thin-walled structures, plates, and shells, minimizing information loss from 3D solid models. I contributed to VABS, a technology continuously funded by the US Army for over 30 years, which models rotor blades with the accuracy of 3D FEA and the efficiency of beam theory. In 2003, I began my academic career at Utah State, expanding my research to micromechanics and developing VAMUCH, a model that achieves the accuracy of Representative Volume Element (RVE) analysis at significantly faster speeds. Later, I integrated structural mechanics and micromechanics to model heterogeneous structures and compute equivalent structural properties based on microstructural details.Upon moving to Purdue in 2013, I introduced the concept of the structure genome to bridge the materials genome with structural analysis, formulating the Mechanics of Structure Genome (MSG) as a unified approach for multiscale constitutive modeling. MSG ensures the best accuracy for a given structural model and is implemented in SwiftComp, a general-purpose constitutive modeling software used independently for virtual testing or as a plugin for other FEA codes for multiscale modeling. With MSG, you can harness the full benefits of recent advances in materials technology. Even without formal training in composites, you can model composites as easily as metals, capturing details as needed and affordable. MSG also enhances conventional structural design and analysis tools to handle new materials with general anisotropy and heterogeneity. If you\'re interested in MSG, VABS, or SwiftComp, please reach out! Let us advance the simulation-based design, manufacturing, and certification of composite materials and structures together!
