About Welkin Johnson
I am a Professor and the Chair of the Biology Department at Boston College. The department includes approximately 30 full-time faculty conducting research in the areas of microbiology, cell/develomental biology and computational biology/bioinformatics; most of the research is supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or the National Science Foundation (NSF). The department is also home to a Ph.D. graduate program, and oversees the undergraduate biology curriculum for the entire university, including some 800+ Biology majors, nursing students and pre-medical students. My own research lab comprises approximately 15 scientists at all levels of experience, including junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, research technicians and undergraduates. My professional career includes training or working at five major academic institutions, including UC Berkeley, UC San Francisco, Tufts University School of Medicine, Harvard Medical School and most recently, Boston College. I have 25 years of experience researching retroviruses (including HIV, SIV and the other AIDS-causing lentiviruses), extensive experience reviewing grants and contracts for the NIH, as well as for the University of California AIDS Research Program and a variety of other foundations, I\'ve organized multiple international meetings, and I am on the editorial review board of several journals. I am currently the Chair of the International Committee on the Taxonomy of Viruses retrovirus section and an academic editor for the journal PLoS One.
