About Billy Carson
I am a PhD candidate in Biomedical Engineering at Duke University developing interpretable machine learning (ML) methods to investigate neurodevelopmental conditions such as autism and ADHD. My goal is to discover patterns in brain activity that can aid in early diagnosis, develop targeted therapies, and inform on treatment outcomes for these populations.With over four years of experience in ML research, I have developed expertise in interpretable ML, deep learning, and computer vision. I have applied these skills to various biomedical data, such as neural activity, 3D imaging, and multimodal biomedical data such as synchronized eye tracking. I have also created and contributed to open-source ML packages and published multiple first-author papers in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings. I enjoy communicating and teaching ML concepts, and have given lectures, presentations, and tutorials at various academic and professional events.Additionally, I have a strong background in neural engineering, with graduate coursework in electrophysiology, neurostimulation, and computational neuroscience. I also have experience in leading and mentoring teams in a project manager role, through Duke\'s Data+ research experience.
