Responsible for intraoperative blood salvage during high blood loss surgeries, including cardiothoracic cases, liver transplants, total hip arthroplasties, and emergency cesarean sections. Assist perfusionists and anesthesiologists by running arterial blood gases, average clotting times, and heparin concentration tests for patients on cardiopulmonary bypass during thoracotomies and sternotomies. Round on ICU and cardiac medsurg patients on mechanical circulatory support, including ventricular assist devices, intra-aortic balloon pumps, and on ECMO, ensuring proper hemodynamics and troubleshoot when necessary. Assist nursing staff with transporting patients on these devices to imaging, for physical therapy, or following implantation. Trained to perform anesthesia technician duties for cardiothoracic surgery and liver transplants. Creates and prepares sterile field with necessary supplies for arterial lines, central lines, and floating a SwanGanz and assists the anesthesiologist with placing the transesophageal echocardiogram. Under the direction of the anesthesiologist, maintains appropriate ratio of blood products in the Belmont Rapid Infuser and washes packed red blood cells.
