About Matt Watkins
I help foundations, intermediaries, nonprofits, and public agencies turn major funding commitments into programs that actually work. I am the Principal of Watkins Public Affairs and have helped organizations secure more than $1.6 billion in public and philanthropic funding across 30+ states. I have supported more than 100 nonprofits, foundations, public agencies, and cross-sector intermediaries nationwide.Organizations work with me when complexity, scale, or political context make alignment difficult, including when they need to:Clarify strategy, messaging, and public narrative:I help leaders clearly articulate what they are building, why it matters, and how it works. This includes strategic communications for foundations and intermediaries, narrative development that aligns grant applications with public-facing materials, and translation of technical or compliance-heavy work into clear, trust-building language.Strengthen funding and fundraising strategy: I help organizations become fundable before they apply. This includes federal, state, and foundation grant strategy and writing, appropriations and public-sector funding navigation, funding landscape analysis, long-term resource planning, and fundraising communications for complex, multi-partner initiatives.Strengthen program design and evaluationI support organizations in strengthening program design and evaluation so funded initiatives are coherent, measurable, and durable. This includes logic models, theories of change, evaluation planning, and sustainability strategy. Much of my work supports intermediaries responsible for coordinating multiple partners and deploying funding across regions or systems. I help build the internal infrastructure needed to manage strategy, communications, programs, and compliance at the same time.In parallel, I am a columnist at The Chronicle of Philanthropy, where I write about the importance of language. I am also a policy writer with bylines in Slate, Washington Monthly, Governing, The Progressive, Chicago Crains Business, Inside Indiana Business, and more. My work has been featured in Salon, Balls and Strikes, Newsweek, Readers Digest, Inside Philanthropy, Nonprofit Quarterly, San Francisco Business Times, Pittsburgh Business Times, Florida Sun Sentinel, and other national and industry outlets.

CEO and Principal Consultant

Watkins Public Affairs is a national advisory firm working where policy, philanthropy, and the public intersect. Most institutions do not fail because they lack good ideas or committed people. They fail because funding, strategy, and public trust are never aligned at the same time.We work across three lanes: funding strategy, communications and narrative advisory, and program and initiative design. For complex initiatives where capital strategy and institutional positioning must move together, those lanes operate as a single integrated model rather than separate engagements.We\'ve supported more than $1.7 billion in competitive public and philanthropic funding across 40+ states, working with foundations, nonprofits, intermediaries, and public agencies on housing, workforce development, clean energy, public health, child care, and regional economic development.
