WORK HISTORY
Founder @Sisters Dialogue
Edmonton, AB, CA
Sisters Dialogue creates space for Muslim women and youth to heal, connect, and thrive.We\'re a grassroots group in amiskwacîwâskahikan, Treaty 6 (Edmonton), born in 2021 out of necessity. As Islamophobic attacks rose, we knew our community needed more than statements. We needed each other.Through peer support, storytelling, and culturally safer spaces, we hold what\'s hard and celebrate what\'s beautiful. Our work is trauma-informed, community-led, and grounded in care. We show up for Muslim women and youth because we are Muslim women, and we know what it means to need a place where you belong.
ABOUT WATI RAHMAT
I\'ve spent over 15 years working in the nonprofit sector, civil society, and government, learning, listening, and trying to show up for the communities I\'m part of. My journey has taken me from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur to Montreal, and now to amiskwacîwâskahikan (Edmonton), Treaty 6 Territory. As a mother, a survivor of family violence, and a Muslim woman who has experienced Islamophobia, I bring lived experience that continues to shape how I lead and why this work matters to me. I\'ve dedicated myself to challenging systems that cause harm, lifting up voices that are often unheard, and creating spaces where equity and care aren\'t just ideals but practice. My work focuses on anti-racism, gender-based violence prevention, and developing culturally safe programs and policies. I walk alongside survivors, help design inclusive initiatives, and manage grant programs that support the vital work of Indigenous, racialized, and faith-based communities.I\'m drawn to storytelling, art, theatre, and peer support as ways to build spaces where people can feel seen, safe, and celebrated. I lead with compassion, trauma-informed practice, and a commitment to genuine inclusion.I believe in showing up as we are, making room for hard truths, and working toward futures where we can all thrive, not just survive.“The time is always right to do what is right.”
