Internship May to October 2021; full-time from October 2021• Conduct study on the economic value facilitated through the icebreaking services by the Canadian Coast Guard in Eastern Canada• Cleaned and organized datasets of various sizes (from 350 rows to 7.5 million rows) and sources (icebreaking deployments data, marine traffic data, international trade data, etc.) using R• Create data visualizations of trends in icebreaking statistics, marine traffic, and economic cost/benefit using Power BI and Excel• Write R and Power Query scripts to automate data-wrangling of recurring data and create summary statistics• Collect data from various sources for the implementation of a general equilibrium model to analyze the effects the marine sectors have on the overall Canadian economy

ABOUT TOM WANG
Hello! I am a policy analyst/junior economist working for the Canadian Government in the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. I graduated in 2021 after completing the Master of Food and Resource Economics at the University of British Columbia. From my academic background, I\'ve developed an interest in promoting environmental sustainability from an economic and financial perspective. As I progress through my career, I hope to amass more knowledge to answer this question: how can we use economic and financial incentives to encourage business operations to adopt more environmentally sustainable practices? I also love working with data, especially in the context of environmental economics, resource optimization, and international trade. Some methods I\'ve employed in class or for work include exploratory data analysis, predictive data modelling/predictive analytics, and data visualization. Some of my favourite classes are Environmental Economics, International Trade, Resource Management/Optimization, Econometrics/Regression Modelling, and International Nutrition. On my own time, I am often watching reruns of The Office, reading obscure pages on Wikipedia, or watching or playing basketball and football with friends. I am also an avid fan of dad jokes.
