ABOUT MUHAMMAD WAKIL SHAHZAD
I am a Professor and Chair in Advanced Energy & Sustainability at Northumbria University (UK), a Royal Academy of Engineering Industrial Fellow, and Founder & CEO of EcoTechX — a deep-tech spinout commercialising next-generation cooling and water-from-air technologies. With over 15 years of experience across academia, industry, and government, my work focuses on delivering real-world solutions to global challenges in sustainable cooling, clean hydrogen, water circular economy, and energy systems integration. I have led and contributed to more than £10M in competitive research funding, including the £2.8M UKRI Ayrton Challenge “S2Cool” project, FCDO Re-inventing Textile Water Circular Economy and the upcoming multi million UK–Saudi clean energy programme. My research outputs include 130+ journal papers, 18 patents, 6 books, and 25+ book chapters, with over 6,800 citations and consistent ranking among the World’s Top 2% Scientists.Alongside my academic leadership, I serve as Chair of the IMechE Tyne & Wear Region, lead CEng interview panels, and advise national and international funding bodies including UKRI, EPSRC, ERC, Horizon Europe and the British Council. I was also selected for the Royal Society MP Pairing Scheme, working directly with policymakers at the UK Department for Energy Security & Net Zero.Through EcoTechX, I translate university research into deployable technologies for data centres, industry and off-grid communities, with live pilots in the UK, Pakistan and Africa. Our platforms enable ultra-low-energy cooling and solar-powered atmospheric water generation, delivering scalable solutions for climate resilience.My mission is simple: to bridge science, industry and policy to deliver technologies that create measurable environmental, economic and societal impact. I actively collaborate with universities, startups, corporates, investors, and governments worldwide to accelerate the transition to a net-zero, water-secure and energy-efficient future.
