The R&D \"Skunkworks\" team at Crown develops next-generation, high impact innovations. I was fortunate to join this small team soon after its creation. Our work ranges from novel equipment design to development of entirely new processes.My role in this group includes ideation, evaluation of ideas through literature research, modeling, and experimentation, and design of experimental apparatus. My role also includes helping the group bring focus and structure to our testing, while still moving quickly and retaining the fun of exploring the unknown.Highlights- Conceived the concept for, and led lab and pilot testing of, a novel shell-seed separation technology. Proved technology at pilot scale. Patent and first commercial deployment are both pending- Supported experimental design and performed model-based analysis of hemp extraction test results. Used results in process model to help define offering to early Crown customer in CBD space- Identified a potentially industry-changing approach to oilseed extraction. Experimentally verified the key physical phenomenon required for success of this approach. If successful, this approach will significantly reduce both the capital cost and energy usage of new oilseed extraction plants- Helping to build a \"skunkworks\" R&D culture in this new group based on rapid prototyping, hypothesis testing, and fundamentals-based analysis of experimental and process data.
