ABOUT VIVIENNE TAM

My passion is to see new biomedical technologies be brought from lab bench to bed side. I see myself working at the interface of lab and clinic with both clinicians and scientists to facilitate faster and more effective translation of medicine. As a PhD candidate at McGill, I collaborate with the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC), Université de Montréal (Udem) and Institut national de la recherche scientifique (INRS), working on near-infrared triggered drug delivery from upconversion nanoparticles for applications ranging from chronotherapy for glioblastoma to improving in-vitro fertilization outcomes. At McGill, I pioneered the development of the first translational research certificate, currently offered to all graduate students in STEM at McGill, with the aim of building an interdisciplinary network of the next generation of translational scientists. I am particularly interested in how science can be more effectively communicated through various forms of media (writing, video, art) to physicians and other stakeholders in the medical community, as well as developing educational and training modules for medical education. To this end, I have written several scicomm articles on my personal blog, hosted LinkedIn Lives and a podcast reviewing the latest research on emotional wellbeing in workplace management as Head of Science at Nurau and developed training modules on topics ranging from time management to emotional resilience for Teaching and Learning Services at McGill. Connect with me if you\'d like to talk about: • How to better connect scientists/clinicians, build interdisciplinary networks and innovate at their intersection • How to evaluate research excellence beyond metrics - how do we measure research impact? How can we pivot incentives to also value teaching/mentorship, collaboration and ethical practices? • Mental health in academia and at the workplace - how do we do better? what are ways we can change culture to better support mental health and build community? • My art-related projects: making music with Ableton, capturing ordinary life with my camera, new fermentation ideas (so far, I\'ve done kefir, kombucha, sourdough, kimchi) My personality types are DISC IS (Harmonizer) and Enneagram 2.
