They stare through their screen, hopeful.“Like this?” Tilting my head, holding up an imaginary taco, and biting into the air.“So you… tilt your head.” Through their body language, tone, averted eyes, and expression change, I could sense the disappointment from my lack of articulation and confidence. I failed the ASB leadership interview. In reality, all I knew how to do was chase. I admired my predecessors, and I followed them without hesitation instead of developing myself. This admiration of mine encouraged me to learn. By signing up for public speaking, psychology, and sociology classes; leadership and networking workshops; and watching interviews on YouTube, I became someone who understood confidence and persistence. I was no longer afraid of getting rejected. I looked forward to failing, which compelled me to run for a position I never thought I would.“.At first, I thought that becoming the President would be impossible for someone like me. The person who failed the ASB leadership interview because she couldn\'t explain how to eat a taco. The person who failed her Key Club secretary election because she did not know how to promote herself. Now I stand here today as the Vice President and Secretary Executive Assistant of Division 26 North, running to be your President for the 20••••24 term. In my time, I learned that it is okay to be afraid, to be shaking in your boots, to fail. Even if you think you are incapable. Even if all they return is blank stares. Just give it a chance.” I witnessed a sight I had not seen before– standing ovations, teary eyes, handshakes, hugs, and smiles. An audience member even came up to me and said I inspired them.
