ABOUT VIVETT DUKES

I am a proud native New Yorker who has been educated from K-16 in public learning institutions across Long Island and New York City. I am a New York State certified ELA teacher (7th-12th), Literacy Specialist (Birth-12th), and Teacher of English to Speakers of Other Languages (Birth-12th). Since 2002, I have served in classrooms, in some capacity, with students in grades Pre-K through graduate school. I am an active member of NCTE, as well as an Executive Board member of NYSEC. Literacy acquisition is my passion and it is my firm belief that reading and writing are civil and human rights that must be equitably afforded to everyone.This belief drives my work in my new role as an English teacher in the NYC Department of Education.In addition to being a career educator, I am a writer, consultant, facilitator, orator, activist, and organizer who cares deeply about those who are systematically disenfranchised. I am committed to social and educational justice, and am particularly well-versed in the nuanced intersection of literacy, social emotional learning, and authentic classroom community building as they directly and indirectly relate to genuinely caring student / teacher relationships, home-school relationships, and the ever-growing school-to-prison pipeline that disproportionately affects communities of color.
