ABOUT VIOLETTE KHAMMAD

My upbringing in Ukraine, Lebanon, and the United Arab Emirates allowed me to understand cross-cultural similarities and differences, along with deepening my passion for languages, international relations, and human rights. Throughout my undergraduate degree in Political Science and Sociology, I sought to apply what I learned in the classroom to ensure university services were readily accessible to students. I wanted to make a difference on campus and for students to have the best possible undergraduate experience, and that was my driving force the 4 years that I was on Students’ Council. In my 2 years in executive roles, I am most proud of introducing an Indigenous student representative on Council and for kickstarting an LGBTQ+ pride club on campus. As I continued my educational journey, my Master’s in Global Governance gave me an understanding of the full range of global actors working together on issues such as migration and climate change. What I did on a smaller scale in my undergraduate experience, I wanted to do that for people globally. My interests in humanitarianism, human rights (women, children, and refugee rights), and global migration landed me an opportunity to intern with a civil society/not-for-profit organization in Berlin that helped other organizations to be transparent, responsive to stakeholders and focused on delivering impact.Currently with the completion of my degree, I am seeking opportunities in the Canadian not-for-profit sector or government to work in advocacy and programming. I hope I can use my skills in research, policy analysis, languages, fundraising and communications to uphold human rights and gender equity around the globe.
