ABOUT VINCENT CASTONGUAY

My experience in the world of geotechnical engineering is diverse, thanks to the various jobs and activities I\'ve been involved in over the past fifteen years. I began my career in the field, where supervising drilling operations for two summers gave me a better understanding of the dynamics and complexity of field work. After getting a taste of the world of consulting engineering (designing technical solutions, coordinating teams, etc.), I spent two years buried in a laboratory working on various soils and equipment during my master\'s degree. It was another instructive experience: how much can you trust your data? My PhD years were full of great experiences. Sometimes I went to conferences to present my work and meet my peers. Other times, I traveled to take courses and learn new knowledge. And there were a few times when I traveled to see the world (including falling in love with the beauty of Scandinavian countries). My research project introduced me to the world of constitutive models (in particular NorSand) and all its subtleties. It was during my doctoral years that I became very involved with the Canadian Geotechnical Society, taking on various roles and responsibilities. It taught me how important it is to get involved, I met a lot of great people and made a ton of friends and colleagues. As a research engineer in Seequent\'s GeoStudio team, I\'ve had the opportunity to add even more to my baggage of experiences. Numerical simulations may sometimes seem somewhat simplistic (thanks to constantly evolving software), but what lies beneath is always complex. Since joining the Sustainable Mining team at AtkinsRéalis, I\'ve come a lot closer to pure geotechnical engineering, which I enjoy immensely. My varied previous experience serves me well in my current role, where I\'m called upon to work on a wide range of challenging projects.
