Lead Designer and Director of Business Development. Formerly PKHLS ArchitectureGravity : Works. As we pondered the monumental task of changing our name we soon realized the levity of this effort. Questions like, “why”? “how does this relate to what we are doing”? “what does it say about us”? “what about our history”? To those questions we always landed back to our mantra of “defying gravity since 1952!” That simple phrase said so much about who we are, what we do, and how we do it. We defy the norm with our practice, our culture, our service. This was a deliberate decision. We have enjoyed the success of Mr. Prigmore’s legacy and now find ourselves poised to embrace the future. We want this experiment to last beyond us. Therefore, the name needed to transcend Haines, Limon, and Stewart. Even Prigmore. Removing our names offered the freedom to say more. Defy the norm. Defy Gravity. And we embrace that. It just works!

ABOUT VINCE HAINES
So what are you up to these days?” was the common theme at my recent KU class reunion. “Whatever my kids are doing” was my flippant response. But yet, not so flippant after all. As with all parents, watching your children discover and excel is very rewarding. Of course, some of their interests are directly related to my own, but lately I have been into cricket, basketball, baseball, cross-country, academics, modeling, hunting, music, golfing, fishing, boy-scouting, and the list goes on and on. What a wonderful job!On my drive home from the reunion, I pondered my response and began to see a direct correlation between how I was enjoying my children to why I enjoy my profession. One of the great discoveries about this profession is the relationship. The fact that you get to research and learn, sometimes live, the world of your clients. Often you have to immerse yourself into the project to begin to solve the design problem. I am an Architect. But some days I get to be a banker, assembly line worker, care giver, entrepreneur, dentist, contractor, teacher, and the list goes on. What a wonderful job!I find great satisfaction in helping others succeed. Architecture is the means by which I can. I am reminded of the line from Charles Dickens famous story The Christmas Carol as Jacob Marley so accurately stated, “Mankind was my business. The common welfare was my business; charity, mercy, forbearance, and benevolence, were, all, my business. The dealings of my trade were but a drop of water in the comprehensive ocean of my business.”
