About Vikas Thamizharasan
My vision is for intelligent machines to aid artists and novices in their creative endeavors. To achieve this, my work intertwines graphics, computer vision, and deep learning to solve problems in image-based 3D reconstruction and editing, 3D shape and texture synthesis, and artistic control of generative models. This involves tackling technical challenges in: • Differentiable rendering: Building computationally efficient tools to obtain the derivatives for complex graphics algorithms for solving inverse problems. • Neural rendering: Rethinking traditional graphics pipelines via approaches like deferred neural rendering and 3D neural rendering. • Geometry and texture processing: Designing geometric deep learning architectures inspired by algebraic topology to learn semantic shape and texture representation, constructing canonical parameterization space of 3D surfaces for applying 2D convolution operators, and building parametric models using neural fields. • Semantic control of generative models and deep image editing: Enabling 3D control of GANs and self-supervised methods for semantic image manipulation
