About Veronica Russell
While I had an interest in the applications of biology research as far back as high school, I did not discover my skill set for the quantitative, analytic side until my undergraduate career. I obtained my BA from University of California Santa Barbara\'s College of Creative Studies (CCS), where I was able to explore different avenues and applications within the field of biology through flexible coursework and independent laboratory research. Ultimately, I found that my skills and interests most closely aligned with the world of computational biology and bioinformatics. Currently, I am a PhD student at Duke University in their Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (CBB) program. I am adept at organizing and integrating massive amounts of data to derive patterns and conclusions using quantitative, analytic methods. In particular, I have experience applying these methods to sequencing data in the context of human disease (especially viruses, the microbiome, and cancer). Beyond research, I also have an interest in the ecosystem that comprises the biotech sphere. Innovation does not exist in a vacuum, and I believe it is essential to understand the process by which innovations and research reach society. This extends to the interplay between research, funding, marketing, policy, consumer base, etc.
