ABOUT VERONICA ROOT MARTINEZ
I am the Simpson Thacher & Bartlett Distinguished Professor of Law at Duke University, with a courtesy appointment at the Fuqua School of Business. I work at the intersection of organizational and professional ethics; corporate compliance; corporate governance; and securities law.My scholarship and advisory work explore a central question: why do organizations continue to experience ethical failure — even when formal compliance systems are in place — and what would it take to build institutions that are genuinely resilient? I regularly speak to legal, business, and regulatory audiences about effective ethics & corporate compliance, board oversight, corporate purpose, DEI risk, and judicial ethics.My academic work has appeared in the Harvard Law Review, Columbia Law Review, Yale Law Journal Forum, as well as other top legal journals. I am the author of \"Building an Effective Ethics and Compliance Program\"(Edward Elgar, forthcoming) and am currently writing \"Reforming the Corporation: Why Surface Fixes Keep Corporations in Crisis.\" I am a co-author on the 5th and 6th editions of \"Securities Litigation, Enforcement, and Compliance\"(casebook), as well as the 6th edition of \"Professional Responsibility: A Contemporary Approach\"(casebook).My Duke Bio is here - https://law.duke.edu/fac/martinez.
