The Settlement Workers in Schools (SWIS) is a program within the school district providing support to students and newcomer parents to Canada. The program is focused towards improving newcomers’ opportunities to become academically, culturally and socially independent. Services include- enabling access to school and community information, services and resources - facilitating referrals to multiple resources available in the community, and providing access to professional services and government assistance - advocating on the newcomer\'s behalf various aspects of the settlement process including educational needs of children, professional and skills development, employment, increasing socio-civic involvement, increasing professional and social networks - providing support in crisis counseling, conflict resolution, and other family support such as housing, benefits, translation, and interpretation, etcSWIS workers in collaboration with the school staff provide constructive and culturally-sensitive communication to newcomer students/families and act as the liaison to mitigate and solve challenges of student/families going through difficult adjustment in their settlement experience
