About Venu Govindaraju
A Scientist with Global ImpactVenu Govindaraju, PhD, has dedicated his life to service, as an educator and a scientist. A pioneer in artificial intelligence and machine learning, Govindaraju leveraged these technologies to transform the United States Postal Service and the postal industry globally. This groundbreaking discovery improved the speed and quality of service for customers while saving these public services billions of dollars. For more than three decades, this innovation in handwriting analysis continues to impact industries as diverse as literature, multilingual OCR and CAPTCHA.Today, his work continues to change lives as principal investigator for the National Artificial Intelligence Institute for Exceptional Education, supported by a $20 million grant from the National Science Foundation and the Department of Education’s Institute of Education Sciences. Govindaraju and his team of researchers seek to aid the work of speech language pathologists in identifying children with speech and language delays, conditions which can lead to long-term academic and social-emotional struggles if left untreated. Pioneering AI research for more than four decades, UB continues to lead as home to Empire AI. The New York State consortium’s $400 million computing center will be built on UB’s North campus, making it among the most powerful computing centers on a university campus. Empire AI gives its members access to high-performance computing power to use for responsible AI research and development. Phase Alpha, the first stage of Empire AI, launched on UB’s downtown campus. The Alpha system is the 245th most powerful computer in the world and includes 96 of the most powerful computer processors currently available for training AI models.
