ABOUT VASIL KOSTIN
Dr. Vasil Kostin is currently undertaking his DPhil at the University of Oxford, focusing on gene therapies under the supervision of Professor Robert MacLaren. He earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Charles University and previously worked as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye and Ear in the AI Ophthalmology Lab, specializing in AI-based disease diagnostics from external eye photographs and multimodal monitoring of inherited retinal disorders.Throughout his career, Vasil has been actively involved in humanitarian efforts, including participation in a medical mission in Itibo, Kenya, and collaborations with the Innovation Center of Doctors Without Borders (MSF) on projects such as developing 3D printable medical devices. Additionally, he serves as a member of the Young Advisory Body to the Ministry of Science, Research, and Innovation in Czechia. Vasil founded and continues to lead the Summer School of Practical Ophthalmology in Prague, which educates final-year medical students and first-year ophthalmology trainees through practical examinations, surgical simulations, and targeted workshops.Vasil is one of the youngest recipients of the prestigious GAMA 2 grant program, awarded by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic, aimed at supporting the validation of applied research and experimental development outcomes. His achievements were recognized with one of the highest national distinctions, the Governmental Award for Gifted Students 2023, presented by the Government of the Czech Republic and the Ministry of Science, Research, and Innovation.
