Senior advisory role to DRDO initiatives related to Metal Additive Manufacturing - 3D Printing, including identification and selection of technologies for key/critical/strategic applications - ultimately contributing to execution roadmaps for POC (proof of concept), validation, and roll out into Indian Defense Services manufacturing programs. Establishing a global, comprehensive, technology, applications & equipment partners eco-system is an objective. A focus is on large and very large format Metal Additive Manufacturing and on Maintenance/Repair/Overhaul (MRO) of critical and/or obsolete parts to reduce supply chain lead times and strategize spare parts supply in the battle theater (land/sea/air force depots) via, for example, mobile field deployable MAM systems. Multi-material additive manufacturing particularly in refractory/high temperature/high fatigue/high creep applications is an important objective. Materials R&D for novel/custom alloys and ensuring sustainable unbreakable supply chain of AM materials and/or internal production of key AM materials is mission critical. An objective is to help establish a substantial DRDO Center of Excellence dedicated to Additive Manufacturing, which would incorporate end to end design for additive manufacturing, training and prototyping academy, a holistic range of AM equipment -(including various Directed Energy Deposition and Powder Bed Fusion formats) for 3D printing and/or surface engineering, in Proof-of-Concept paradigms, establish sustainable and repeatable processes and process validation, implementation of digital twin concepts across geographies and laboratories and key partners, end to end post processing, testing, building the path for certification for all Indian Defense Services applications and eventual adoption for serial production. A positive and progressive view towards (Public Private Partnerships). Ultimate High-Level goal is for Defense Services to achieve self-reliance in AM R&D & manufacturing.
