ABOUT VANISHREE JOSEPH
When I joined the National Institute of Rural Development and Panchayati Raj (NIRDPR) in 2017, I stepped into a space where research meets policy, and policy meets people. Today, I serve as Head, Centre for Gender Studies, and also as Director, NRLM Resource Cell—roles that have given me the privilege to work on rural transformation.Over the years, my work has spanned: Gender-responsive budgeting – helping institutions design policies and programmes that reflect women’s realities. Women’s leadership in local governance – studying and strengthening their role in PRIs and ULBs. Nutrition & care economy – building literacy, assessing gaps, and designing training and policy notes to empower women and adolescent girls. Livelihoods & skilling – shaping strategies under DAY-NRLM to ensure women’s SHGs thrive in both farm and non-farm sectors. Institutional partnerships – leading collaborations with international and national organizations to mainstream gender and child rights into rural development programmes.Along this journey, I have also authored case studies, policy briefs, and academic articles. What drives me is a simple belief: true rural development begins when women’s voices are not just heard, but centered in decision-making.Grateful to my mentors, colleagues, and my ever-curious daughter who reminds me why inclusive futures matter. Looking forward to continuing this journey of learning, unlearning, and shaping impactful collaborations.
