About Vanessa Tello Rubio
From the beginning of high school, I knew I had to pursue a career that relates to mathematics. However, I used to lack knowledge of the career that best fit me. It was especially difficult being a first-generation, Hispanic student. The careers close to my family included being a construction worker or becoming a waitress. I didn\'t know that the field of Accounting existed. Additionally, I thank my peers and teachers who introduced me to the accounting field. During my first year of college, I immediately fell in love with my Accounting 2010 course. Knowing that I\'m learning the \"language of business\" lets me know that I\'m going down the right path. Furthermore, I am currently a first-year student at the University of North Texas. I\'m in organizations such as the Accounting Scholars Program, Women in Business, and a current Emerald Eagle Scholar. I\'m thankful for these programs that expand my knowledge with guest speakers such as KPMG and so many networking opportunities. I recently attended a leadership summit for Deloitte which allowed me to network, expand my critical thinking skills, and overall learn more about what people do in this field. Additionally, I have previous work experience at an arcade known as Chuck E. Cheese. I had the opportunity to learn how to accurately process cash and card transactions in fast-paced environments. I had the ability to practice my leadership abilities by training and providing roles to cast members to ensure the success of the business. I was able to work on my communication skills in both English and Spanish by engaging with customers as a cashier. I even served as a birthday hostess from time to time and had to let the guests feel welcome and meet all their needs. It was a very customer-orientated field in which I received lots of practice on. Besides my accounting coursework, I\'m also taking classes such as BCIS 2610 which is expanding my knowledge of Microsoft Excel, although I am pretty familiar with it. I am also pretty familiar with Microsoft Word due to some high school courses. However, I do plan to get certified in Microsoft Excel to make sure I fully master the material. Finally, I hope to gain more technical skills needed to succeed in the accounting field throughout the next 4 years of my college career. With constant assistance from my organizations and mentors, I don\'t doubt my success in the future. I am confident that I will be able to succeed in the field and show my Hispanic community the possibility of success in this field!
