I led the transformation of Girls Inc. into a nationally recognized youth development program serving over 600 girls annually with year-round education, mentorship, and leadership programming. I secured new funding streams, refined data tracking systems, and elevated youth voice across program design. My leadership centered on creating safe, empowering spaces for girls—especially those historically excluded or underestimated.

ABOUT VANESSA HELBIG JOHNSON

For me, leadership is about unlocking potential and building communities where every young person and family can thrive. I’m privileged to serve as Vice President of Youth Services & Adult Education at YWCA Nashville & Middle Tennessee and as the Executive Director of Girls Inc. Nashville. In these roles, I lead with a mission-driven heart—focusing on empowering youth, uplifting families, and cultivating positive change across our community. As part of my work, I oversee a portfolio of programs including Girls Inc, AMEND Together, and our Family Learning Center. These initiatives range from inspiring girls to be strong, smart, and bold, to engaging men and boys in ending violence against women, to providing adult education and literacy support for families. Despite their different approaches, they share a common goal: to uplift and equip our community’s youth and families. Together, we reach thousands of individuals each year with education, mentorship, and resources that transform lives.I believe deeply in the power of mentorship and storytelling. Over my 15+ years in youth development, I’ve mentored students and young professionals—finding that sharing our stories creates powerful connections and builds confidence. Seeing a former mentee grow into a community leader (or even return as a mentor herself) is one of the greatest rewards of my career. I frequently share these experiences and insights as a speaker on youth leadership, mentorship, and community development, hoping to inspire others to invest in the next generation.Grounded in a care-centered leadership philosophy, I strive to lead with empathy, creativity, and vision. I’ve been honored as a Nashville Emerging Leader and ATHENA Young Professional Award Recipient, and I collaborate with partners like the Nashville Predators Foundation and Cummins to expand our mission’s reach. But what drives me most is helping others find their strength—and lifting up leaders among the youth, families, and communities we serve—so together, we can help shape a more beautiful and thriving landscape across Nashville. That’s the work I’m most proud of, and the future I’m committed to helping build.
