Conduct outreach to farmworkers in Oregon each summer through various venues including home visits, labor housing visits, small group presentations, health fairs and radio shows to improve their knowledge about field sanitation, wage laws, discrimination, workplace health and safety and available resources in Mixteco and Spanish.Assist attorneys with approximately 50 different cases each year from conducting initial interviews to assisting in representation.Assist attorneys identifying potential cause of action after initial client interview.Assist attorneys preparing clients for the State of Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries (BOLI) and the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) interviews, depositions, mediation and trials.Develop, design and disseminate educational outreach materials in various indigenous languages with the help of other indigenous-language speakers.Have been collaborating with the Oregon Judicial Department for the last 16 years to recruit, co-teach and train indigenous-language speakers such as Mixteo, Triqui, Kanjobal, Chuj, Purepecha, Nahuatl, among others to become qualified interpreters in Oregon resulting in more than 200 total past participants.Assisted attorneys on five employment class-action cases filed by class representatives to represent a large group of workers on wage claims in case development, litigation support and the distribution of settlement checks to over class members many of whom spoke an indigenous language.Participated in a multi-year Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR) project funded by the National Institute of Health titled Promoting the Occupational Health of Indigenous Farmworkers (20••••08) and Prevent and Reduce Adverse Health Effects of Pesticides on Indigenous Farmworkers (20••••16) to assess the workplace health and safety needs of indigenous farmworkers through individual surveys, focus groups, bio-monitoring protocol and intervention methods.
