Artistic Director and Managing Director @Clemens Sels Museum Neuss
Clemens Sels Museum Neuss - Neuss, DE
The Clemens Sels Museum Neus has a broad spectrum of art collections and historical objects with around visitors per year where I am currently responsible for managing annual budget of 1,5 Mio Euros and 13 staff. The highlights from my role to date include- Managing the reopening of the museum after moving the entire collection to external storage and supervising the renovation work. This meant developing a new corporate identity and implementing a new concept for presenting the permanent collection. This was a huge challenge for everyone involved and we succeeded in reopening the museum on schedule with more than 800 guests in one day- Curating, coordinating and overseeing exhibitions including publications and the education program for: Longing for Colour - Moreau, Matisse & Co; From Ensor to Matisse; Far Away so Close - Sketchbooks by Johann Wilhelm Schirmer, involving cooperation between six German museums; The Magic of the Moment - Wilhelm Schmurr; Autonomy Tracks - Henri Rousseau and the Naïve Artists; and Inspiration and Creative Urge - Pablo Picasso- Successfully increasing the number of visitors to the museum by organizing special events throughout 2012 to recognize the museum’s 100th anniversary, including the ceremonial act for 500 guests; all events received excellent press reviews- Ensuring the opening of new branch of the Clemens Sels Museum - Feld-Haus. Museum for Popular Imagery - I managed the new presentation of the permanent art collection, The World of Experience

ABOUT UTA HUSMEIER-SCHIRLITZ
Art appeals me because art works reflect the spirit of time and society. It is this fascination for art that got me into the field of museums where, as artistic director I determine the exhibition programs and also curate shows by myself, and as managing director I am accountable for the budget and for third party funds. My key skills include a broad specialized knowledge in 19th and 20th century art and an extended experience in international exhibition management which, when coupled with my creativity, talent for organisation and ability to think analytically, has enabled me to successfully:* Position a museum on the basis of appealing temporary exhibitions and in regard to its collections.* Develop a wide range of educational programs and guide tours in order to take the growing diversity of society into account * Set up new series of events on order to attract more young people * Deal with new forms of institutional cooperation and participation of pupils, students and associations for the enrichment of the program Being able to identify the unique selling point of an institution is highly advantageous as it enables me to define a set-up to start positioning an institution in way that gives it a clear distinctive brand. My clients are inspired by the extraordinary results that I can achieve for them with minimal budget and manpower, they appreciate my knowledge of how the art business works and like working with me because I am reliable and authentic. For me it is important to create exhibitions that linger in the memory of the visitors; to build up a museum as an open minded institution, as a meeting point for everyone interested in art no matter what their background. I would like museums to accomplish something commendable for social harmony and I would like to give museums an integration function for society.
