About Urval Kheni

I am a Computer Engineering student at CHARUSAT with strong interests in computer networking, cybersecurity, and open-source development.I am naturally curious about how systems work internally, especially network protocols and the infrastructure that powers the Internet. This curiosity led me to explore real-world tools such as Wireshark and ns-3 to better understand how large-scale networking systems are built and analyzed. As part of this learning journey, I contributed to the Wireshark codebase by improving ICMP protocol validation and adding expert warnings for protocol violations, helping strengthen packet analysis accuracy.I also contributed to the ns-3 network simulator by converting the tcp-bbr example from C++ to Python, which gave me hands-on experience with networking research tools, CI pipelines, and collaborative development in large open-source projects.Beyond open source, I actively participate in cybersecurity learning platforms, hackathons, and hands-on labs to strengthen both theoretical understanding and practical skills. My long-term goal is to deepen my expertise in networking and network security and become a cybersecurity professional who can help build and protect reliable systems used by people around the world. For me, open source is not just about contributing code — it is a way to learn from global communities and understand how real-world technology evolves.Current areas I enjoy exploring:• Network protocols and packet analysis• Cybersecurity and defensive security• Open-source networking tools• Systems and network researchI am always excited to learn from the community and collaborate on meaningful technical projects.

Experience

  1. Open Source Contributor (Wireshark)

    Wireshark Foundation

    Jan 2026 — Present

Contributed to the Wireshark network protocol analyzer by improving ICMP protocol validation.• Implemented an expert warning when the ICMP Code field must be zero for specific message types according to RFC 792, RFC 1256, and RFC 950.• The update detects protocol violations in packets such as Echo Request/Reply, Timestamp Request/Reply, Router Solicitation, and Address Mask Request/Reply.• Contribution was reviewed and merged into the main Wireshark codebase through the project’s open-source review process.
