About Ummar Jamal

I am a law graduate from the University of Kashmir and currently serve as the National President of the Jammu and Kashmir Students Association. I also head the networking division of the Young Lawyers Forum. Previously, I served as General Secretary of the Law Society at the School of Law, University of Kashmir, and interned at the Jammu & Kashmir Legislative Assembly and the Supreme Court of India.I am the co-founder of the J&K Centre for Peace Research and Sustainable Development (JKCPRS), a registered policy think tank working in spheres of education and beyond.I have worked as a Legal Correspondent for Bar and Bench from October 2024- October 2025, reporting the higher judiciary, including the Supreme Court of India.Presently, I work as Research Assistant at J&K and Ladakh High Court.As a passionate writer, I regularly contribute columns to leading national and regional publications, including The Hindu, The Indian Express, The Telegraph, The Wire, The Print, Outlook, Live Law, and NewsClick. In addition, I serve as the education columnist for Kashmir Observer, where I write weekly on issues related to education.

My articles focus on the accessibility and quality of education, systemic inequalities, outdated pedagogical methods, and the lack of academic freedom and many other such issues. Through these writings, I aim to advocate for reform and raise awareness about the pressing educational concerns in Jammu and Kashmir, contributing to the broader conversation on improving education for all.
