About Uma R. Chatterjee

Hi there! I’m Uma-a mental health neuroscientist, science communicator, advocate, peer support specialist, & survivor bridging the gap between mental health research & lived experience. Fueled by my own survivorship of SMI, I’m earning my PhD in Neuroscience as an ICTR/NIH TL1 Predoctoral Fellow in Dr. Michael Cahill’s Lab at UW-Madison studying the neurobiology of neuropsychiatric disorders including OCD, bipolar disorder, & schizophrenia; I’m concurrently earning my PhD minor in Science Communication. My thesis research investigates the molecular + biochemical mechanisms, & genetic + environmental risk factors, regulating synaptic plasticity & behavioral phenotypes in OCD + psychiatric disorders. I strive to develop novel therapeutic targets for serious mental illnesses (SMI), with particular interests in precision psychiatry & mechanisms of action driving psychedelics. I earned my M.S. in Neuroscience from UTDallas—notably as a non-traditional student & previous college dropout—studying the cellular mechanisms driving complex brain disorders. I’ve also studied the effects of psychedelic-assisted therapy for PTSD on comorbid OCD across several disciplines (neurobiology, pharmacology, psychology, clinical trial design). I’ve presented my research at numerous scientific conferences worldwide, receiving several accolades including presentation, research, training, & travel awards. All of my work is informed by my own lived experience with SMI (OCD, PTSD, treatment-resistant depression, bulimia+), cancer, chronic illnesses, disabilities, & identities as a non-traditional student + South Asian immigrant. I bridge the gap between mental health research & lived experience as a globally invited public speaker, media contributor, & host of ‘A Chat with Uma\'-a mental health scicomm & advocacy podcast with thousands of listeners in 60+ countries. I hold multiple leadership roles to maximize the collective impact of my coalescing expertises in research, advocacy, communication, & strategic growth. I serve as board member for Society for Neuroscience-UMC & past president of OCD Wisconsin (501-c3 nonprofit, IOCDF affiliate) leading outreach initiatives through scicomm projects & raising mental health awareness in historically excluded populations. I serve on One Mind’s Lived Experience Council, where I advise & consult for research programs, startups, & established companies on mental health science, strategy, & leadership. Most importantly, I love facilitating community, connection, support, & service in any way possible. I look forward to connecting with you!
