WORK HISTORY
Lead Data Engineer @Chartmetric
Toronto, ON, CA
In 2024, I transitioned to a Senior IC role to- focus on high-impact projects involving our Data Infra: Airflow, Clickhouse, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, and Elasticsearch. Setting up Clickhouse and integrating it in our infra was one such key project that helped us improve our prod API query performance while reducing overall costs- reduce our cloud computing costs by optimizing our query performance and scaling our infra. One highlight here was my effort that resulted in a reduction of our monthly ElasticCloud costs by 55%- interact with key customers, including major labels, and setup data shares using AWS S3, Snowflake, DataBricks, and GCS- supervise and mentor another engineer in my team to work on high-impact projects

ABOUT UMANG SHARAF
I’m Umang and I enjoy solving complex problems and tracking all my life\'s data!Currently, I’m a Lead Data Engineer at Chartmetric, a music analytics startup, where I focus on high-impact projects that primarily involve Airflow, Clickhouse, PostgreSQL, Snowflake, and Elasticsearch. I’ve also been directly involved in reducing our cloud computing costs by optimizing our query performance and scaling our infra. Our data infra powers our app, which lets our customers see insights for 11M artists, 30M Spotify playlists, 130M tracks, and more in real-time! I’m also responsible for data shares with key customers, including major labels, that are supported using AWS S3, Snowflake, DataBricks, and GCS. In 2020, I joined Chartmetric after applying for the “SQL Ninja” role and the job fulfilled that promise. Over the years, I scaled up the Data team and managed 10+ Data Engineers and Data Scientists. I worked on and led all our DE, DS, and Data Infra projects — from ingestion pipelines (to source raw data from new music and social media platforms) to ML projects (to rank our tracks and artists) to ES indexes (to make those analytics data available for our backend). In 2019, I graduated from the Master of Engineering degree at UC Berkeley. As part of the program, I specialized in Machine Learning courses including Optimization and Reinforcement Learning. One of my two Capstone projects was focused on applying RL to improve traffic light coordination in a simulation of the city of Arcadia, California. In 2018, I published an iOS app called \"Drinks Tracker\" to the App Store, which was downloaded nearly times in a year! In 2016, I completed my undergraduate degree in Computer Science at *The* Ohio State University with dual minors in Statistics and General Business. In my spare time, I enjoy tracking every aspect of my life including daily activities, locations, workouts, health metrics such as sleep and nutrition, and board game plays. I also enjoy watching and re-watching science fiction classics such as Star Trek and Doctor Who. My current fitness goal is to complete my 4th half-marathon in under 2 hours.
