ABOUT UMA DWIVEDI

Sociological data scientist and writer with experience in narrative analysis. I am interested in innovating within the natural language processing space to develop tools that analyze various kinds of text data (literary, social media, archival, etc.) and yield insights into how people communicate with and about each other. The ways various groups describe themselves and are described by others illuminate the kind of challenges and prejudices these groups face, which, in turn, informs policy and social service providers as to what kinds of supports are needed and how their implementation should be approached. My senior thesis runs a variety of NLP models on literary fiction depictions of suicide and suicidality to analyze the sociocultural construction of suicide. I seek to actualize NLP\'s enormous but largely unrealized potential for enacting social good. With 8 years of programming experience, a robust grounding in social science, expertise in various approaches to language and narrative-including editorial and writerly perspectives-a passion for social service, and an unquenchable love of learning, I believe myself uniquely suited for innovation in how we understand ourselves and each other. Recipient of the National Merit Scholarship and a grant from We Need Diverse Books. Finalist for the Presidential Scholarship. Poetry, fiction, and nonfiction published in a variety of journals, including the minnesota review & Black Warrior Review.
