Psychology of Personality 304 A critical survey of various theoretical approaches to the study of human personality, including psychoanalytic, dispositional, cognitive, phenomenological, and social learning perspectives.Content: Exploration of environmental and inherited factors which produce a particular personality structure; includes psychoanalytic, humanistic, existential, trait, behavioral, social learning, and cognitive theories.Abnormal Psychology 302This course introduces the topic of abnormal psychology or psychopathology. Abnormal psychology is concerned with the classification, scientific study, and treatment of mental disorders. We will examine definitions of abnormality and its relationship to normal psychological response and adaptation. We will also survey the major diagnostic categories of mental disorders as they are described in The diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-V) and causal explanations for abnormal behavior from psychodynamic, psychosocial, cognitive-behavioral and biological perspectives. We will learn about research methodologies that are used to improve our knowledge of mental illness and evaluate the treatments for mental illness. This course will also survey and consider the efficacy of various treatment modalities.
