About Tyra Johnson
I’ve always been called to explore everything life has to offer, and that curiosity still shapes my path. For nine years, I built my career in project management within the tech industry, leading software implementations, managing enterprise accounts, and coordinating complex cross-functional work. I learned how to build trust, navigate moving parts, and bring structure to big ideas. At the same time, I was building a creative ecosystem I could live in for the long haul.My studio practice grew out of a deep pull toward art, landscape, and architecture. Today, through Tyra J Studio, I create sculptural installations that live somewhere between art and environment, often working with clay, plaster, cellulose fiber, sand, pigment, stone, and metal. Some projects are commissioned for commercial and healthcare spaces. Others are independent and immersive. All of them are rooted in a larger exploration of identity, land, and the spaces we inhabit.I’m also the Founder and Creative Director of Indra Project, a multidisciplinary platform producing immersive experiences, site-specific activations, and media work centered around narrative and place. It’s an extension of my belief that environments, whether physical or performative, can shift how we see ourselves. In addition to my studio and creative direction work, I serve as Board President of Friends of Darryl Ratcliff, supporting the preservation and amplification of Darryl Ratcliff’s artistic legacy through exhibitions, scholarship, and community programming. At this point in my career, I don’t see creativity and structure as opposites. I see them as partners. My work lives in that balance, where strategy supports intuition and environments are built to be experienced, not just viewed.
