I am an instructor and subject matter expert for the National Fire Academy. I assisted with the revisions of the 10-day Chemistry for Emergency Response course, which evolved into the new Chemical Hazard Analysis for Risk-Based Response course. In this course, responders are prepared to function safely at the scene of a hazardous materials incident by understanding the potential hazards that may be encountered. Chemical nomenclature and basic principles of chemistry are taught in order to assess risks to both responders and the public. The course includes problem-solving sessions and interactive discussions to cover topics such as salts and inorganic nonsalts, hydrocarbons, hydrocarbon radicals and hydrocarbon derivatives. It is one of the most sought after classes offered at the National Fire Academy and has long been considered the \"gold standard\" for first responder chemistry education.
