About Tyler Okamoto

I am a robotics engineer at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), specializing in designing and building sampling systems for life-detection mission concepts on Ocean Worlds like Enceladus and Europa. With a Master\'s degree from MIT, where I conducted mechatronics research with Dr. Kamal Youcef-Toumi, and a Mechanical Engineering degree with a minor in Aerospace Engineering from Caltech, I have a strong foundation in electromechanical systems, particularly within the aerospace industry. Rapid prototyping and technology development is at the core of my work, enabling me to innovate and deliver solutions efficiently. At JPL, I have been pivotal in advancing sample handling technologies for missions targeting Enceladus and Mars. My role in the Supercritical CO2 and Subcritical H2O Analysis (SCHAN) project involved designing front-end sample handling architectures as the lead Co-Investigator. This project has allowed me to create and test robust sample handling systems under extreme conditions, crucial for the success of space missions. In the Enceladus Sampling Development project, I developed a system to generate and capture micron-sized ice particles at high velocities. This innovation has significantly advanced our sample capture capabilities. My work included conducting end-to-end TVAC tests to validate these systems under simulated space conditions, ensuring their readiness for future mission integration.Beyond my technical work, I serve as Co-President of the Early Career Community, organizing resources and events for over members, and mentoring interns to support their professional development. I also have a passion for photography and working with cameras. This interest complements my technical skills and allows me to capture and share the wonders of our world and beyond. I am a Robotics Technologist specializing in the development of advanced sampling systems for space exploration missions. My work is primarily focused on Ocean Worlds like Enceladus and Europa, where I design and build innovative solutions to collect and analyze extraterrestrial samples. In the Supercritical CO2 and Subcritical H2O Analysis (SCHAN) project, I have played a key role in designing front-end sample handling architectures for both Enceladus plume sampling and Mars landed missions as the lead Co-Investigator. My work included conducting freezer tests, designing components to withstand extreme conditions, and ensuring successful integration with the SCHAN instrument suite. For the Enceladus Sampling Development project, I developed a unique system to generate and capture micron-sized ice particles. This innovation involved conducting end-to-end TVAC tests, managing system temperature and pressure, and validating particle capture under simulated space conditions. My contributions have significantly advanced our capabilities in sample capture and transfer for future space missions. In addition to my technical responsibilities, I have mentored summer interns and contributed to team leadership. As Co-President of the Early Career Community at JPL, I organize resources and events to support over members, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment.
