ABOUT TYLER DESENA
I am a first-generation, premedical student at New York University, pursuing a BA in biology with a chemistry minor. My academic career has been built around the pursuit of cutting edge research. I work as a Clinical Research Assistant and Medical Scribe with the Limb Lengthening and Complex Reconstruction service at the Hospital for Special Surgery. Here, I study osseointegration for lower extremity amputation, a procedure that can drastically improve mobility and quality of life outcomes for patients. I have previously worked as a Photochemical Research Assistant attempting to develop innovative synthetic methodologies for more effective synthesis of chemical compounds using visible light. Methods like this can reduce the environmental toll and cost of production of pharmaceuticals and agricultural products compared to conventional methods, consequently lowering costs for patients and consumers. I have also worked as an intern in the Sports Medicine department of the Hospital for Special Surgery, resulting in authored publications in peer-reviewed journals. Beyond academics, I am committed to gaining a comprehensive understanding of patient care and working to serve those facing physical disabilities. I serve as the Education and Outreach Coordinator on the Arthritis Foundation\'s Young Professional Leadership Board, working to gain an understanding of the challenges faced by patients with autoimmune disease, while specifically focusing on dispelling common misconceptions surrounding Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis. I also volunteer with organizations such as the New York Special Olympics, where I get to observe not only the struggles of physical disabilities but how individuals can excel despite them. I have also worked as a physical therapy volunteer where I was able to help patients recovering from injury and surgery, complementing my other experiences with musculoskeletal care. On a personal note, rooted in a family history of agriculture, I spend my free time tending to my own in-apartment garden as well as being involved in initiatives like GrowNYC, and NYU\'s Community Agriculture Project. I have experienced first hand the positive impact green-spaces have on health and wellbeing, and I think those benefits should be accessible to everyone. I hope to play a role in ensuring all communities can enjoy the advantages of green-space.
