ABOUT TYLER CHRISTIAN
I am a PhD candidate at the University of Plymouth supervised by Dr Sarah Collins and Dr Katherine Herborn. My project is titled “Reimagining Farmland Bird Biodiversity Surveys: Acoustic Monitoring and Citizen Science for Biodiversity Assessment” and will be in collaboration with Rothamsted Research. During this project, I will be further developing my skills including ornithology, acoustic analysis, citizen science, and machine learning. My gap year involved travelling in China and working as a ESL (English Second Language) teacher in Shenzhen where I support adult and child learners to learn and practice the language. I do this through a combination of 1-1 and group lessons on a freelance basis. I am also a MSc Ecology, Evolution and Conservation graduate from Imperial College London\'s Silwood Park Campus who aspires to study for a PhD and pursue a career in academic research. I am a skilled field ecologist with a lot of experience in statistical analysis and data visualisation using the R programming language. My interests lie in understanding species interactions and behavioural ecology, in particular focusing on ornithology.My Master’s thesis focused on studying the vocalisations of house sparrows (Passer domesticus). This involved a month’s of field work on Lundy island followed by acoustic and large-scale data analysis. My undergraduate dissertation involved researching the selective preferences of holly leaf miners (Phytomyza ilicis) in terms of various abiotic and biotic factors. Through this, I found trends in the miners selecting leaves based on the local sunlight intensity.I am also experienced at public engagement, having run multiple booths and spoken at schools, talking about research and careers in STEM.Please feel free to reach out if you would like to connect or have any questions :)
