ABOUT TY BARZAK
Ty Barzak is an Additive Manufacturing Engineer at Ursa Major Technologies with a passion for pushing additive and aerospace boundaries. With a foundation of GRIT built at Youngstown State University where he graduated with a Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical Engineering, Ty had all the necessary qualities to help build Ursa Major\'s Advanced Manufacturing Lab from the ground up. He helped implement/operate LPBF machines, post-processing equipment, develop AS9100 procedures/documentation, and perform materials testing/optimization on newly developed AM metals.Now, Ty has helped build two sites in the Youngstown/Boardman area and oversees the production schedule, maintenance, training, and logistics for 5 LPBF printers worth of parts. He utilizes connections at every vendor to increase production rate externally, while enhancing internal procedures and training to maintain high machine utilization on the daily. During his time as a student, Ty had the privilege of spearheading a dynamic team of engineering students to develop a groundbreaking off-road vehicle from concept to reality through SAE Baja. Here, Ty used the knowledge he developed in the classroom and through internships to design, analyze, manufacture, and test major components of the 4WD powertrain system. By the end of the year, Penguin Baja Racing was able to claim a Top 10 finish in a field of 200+ teams, marking the highest finish and first 4WD vehicle in program history.In the workforce, Ty was introduced to several areas of manufacturing during three internships. First, at Acutec Precision Aerospace he gained knowledge of high accuracy machining for aerospace components, the capabilities of several machines, and the need for fixture design fresh out of high school. Ty then spent time at Shorts Tool and Die where he was introduced to the precision required in the design, machining, and assembling of injection molds. He was able to reverse engineer an outdated mold and implement modern techniques into a new redesign. With a firm grasp on subtractive manufacturing, Ty spent his time at JuggerBot3D furthering his passion for additive manufacturing and product design. Here, he worked on designing new framing, gantry assemblies, and RnD pieces for JuggerBot\'s big-area 3D printers. In addition, Ty helped research the printability of custom materials and developed new tests and models for characterization.
